Chalk Line's mission is to CREATE radical new work that will DISRUPT the playbook, to enact real CHANGE.
Through cross sector partnerships, we tour new socio-political writing by ambitious underrepresented voices to lead intervention for change.
We believe in the power of theatre to benefit, enrich, and develop communities.
Founded in Luton in 2018, Chalk Line platforms urgent work on both national and international stages. We are a multi-award winning company, working in residency at The Hat Factory Arts Centre, and as Associate Artists of Next Generation Youth Theatre.
As a company we look to experiment with form, by tackling socio-political subject matters in an innovative way that is challenging yet entertaining. Play is at the centre of our practice; our work is often the result of experimentation through extensive research and development in collaboration with ground breaking writers.
We have a decade of experience in developing new plays from inception, into publishing with companies such as Methuen, Salamander Street and Playdead Press. Our work is both thematically and visually ambitious, receiving great critical acclaim on our approach to contemporary theatre-making.
"One of the most interesting companies of recent years" Lyn Gardner, The Stage.
In conversation with our productions, we provide extensive outreach programmes, which campaign, raise awareness and provide intervention on urgent social issues. Our work with communities, has benefitted thousands of people and artists. In 2025 alone, our free knife crime intervention scheme for marginalised young people reached over 1000 participants in partnership with the Ben Kinsella Trust across the UK. We firmly believe in the power of theatre as a tool for change and the need for intervention schemes to impact people beyond the stage.
We believe that the main difference between those who get to make work and those who don't is access to opportunity. We are dedicated to supporting those from disadvantaged backgrounds to access a wealth of resources and mentorship. We run year round artist development programmes, enabling artists to create work and learn skills at no cost.
All of our outreach and development programmes are aimed at creating long term engagement to galvanise lasting change within communities local to us and across our regional networks.
